Fortunately, true orthodontic emergencies are rare. But, when they do happen, our orthodontists in Oak Lawn are always available and ready to take care of them. Just call us at the number below if you ever have any concerns and we’ll be happy to help. By letting us know what is happening with your orthodontic appliances, we can determine if you need to come in right away or if the issue can be addressed at your next scheduled appointment.
Here is what you should do with common orthodontic issues:
If you have suffered a direct injury to your mouth or teeth, the first thing you should do is check in with your dentist. Your dentist is the only person qualified to treat whatever teeth-related injuries you may have, e.g., a tooth has been knocked out, severely displaced, or fractured. If a dental visit is necessary, be sure to follow it up with a visit to our office. We will examine your orthodontic appliances to see if anything has become dislodged or displaced and make adjustments or replacements as needed.
A broken or damaged appliance will interfere with your treatment if it is not fixed. If you discover any disturbances, such as loose bands or brackets, broken or poking wires, or if you are experiencing pain after a few weeks of getting your braces, call our office. True emergencies are rare and there are often things you can do at home to address many problems until your next visit. In most cases, you do not have to come to the office right away unless you are in pain or are experiencing severe discomfort.
Soreness is normal after getting your braces on. Swish warm salt water (one teaspoon of salt to eight ounces of water) around your mouth. If you’re still sore, try an over-the-counter pain reliever or a topical anesthetic like Orabase or Orajel.
No big deal! All you need is your toothbrush, a piece of dental floss, or even a regular toothpick. Just be gentle.
Cover it with wax or push it back into the molar tube with a blunt object like a pencil eraser or Q-tip.
Generally, this can be left in place until your next appointment. Call the office as soon as you notice a loose band or bracket so we can discuss how soon you need to be seen.
This needs to be seen as soon as possible for replacement or adjustment. Please contact us to set up an appointment,
